Laughter Really is the Best Medicine

Research has been proving over and over that laughter promotes improved mood, increased cognitive performance, deeper breathing and more efficient oxygen intake. Laughter immediately raises our sense of well-being and increases “happy hormones” in the body. Did you know that when you fake a laugh, your body doesn’t know the difference and will produce the same feel-good chemicals as if you were sincerely laughing? Laughter yoga was created by Dr. Madan Kateria, a world-renowned cardiologist. Our co-founder and the director of The Exclusive Hawaii, Joyce Marvel-Benoist, trained directly with Dr. Kateria and has trained other leaders to facilitate laughter yoga.

It looks a little silly, but who can argue with a fun way to cultivate child-like enthusiasm and relieve depression and anxiety? After participating in only one or two laughter yoga sessions, clinically depressed people surprise themselves by giggling at jokes. Students studying for tests score higher when doing laughter exercises before going in to exams. Business executives create better communication when they laugh wholeheartedly before meetings.

What Does Laughing Do with Addiction?

Numbing the pain of depression, shame, fear is why we drink, use – or whatever it is we over do .So why not use laughter to curb that depression and anxiety? It’s fun, not harmful, and builds a wonderful lifetime habit that improves work, play and family. At The Exclusive Hawaii, we combine laughter yoga with brain gym exercises, and sometimes even with neural tapping such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Stimulating happy hormones and brain activity helps people heal underlying issues that have led to addiction.

When you are present and fully engaged in a playful activity, it affects your entire being on a cellular level. For example, during laughter yoga, you may be laughing out loud – engaging your abdominal muscles, taking in more oxygen and increasing blood circulation to your brain and your entire body! Additionally, your body releases and mixture of endorphins, which are often referred to as “happy hormones.” Endorphins are a key aspect to overcoming depression. In the process of laughter exercises, you can actually fake it and get results because researchers found that your body doesn’t know if the laughter is fake, it releases substances that improve your mood and wellbeing. You simply participate with the experience and fully engage while your body creates a more vital, healthful environment.
