Grady Keystone Boykin

ART & MUSIC THERAPY TEACHER

Grady is on a mission to disprove several common myths about art. One is that artists are born, and we come into the world with talent, or else we have none. This is, of course, a ridiculous notion for someone who teaches art! Yet, most people, at some point in their lives, have had someone say to them, “You are not an artist,” and sadly, they believed it. Grady declares that the truth is: art can be learned — and often, it takes very little to free the artist within. If you tell him you are not an artist, he will probably ask, “Could you write a novel if you didn’t know the alphabet? Let’s learn the alphabet of art and find out if you have something to reveal.”

We each have a personal signature and handwriting that is very difficult to forge. Likewise, even if a classroom full of people studied with the same master painter or sculptor, each student would create art that is unique; our signature art. It is by removing the blocks and judgments that have accumulated over our lifetimes that we can freely and joyfully let the art within become visible, and celebrate our individuality. Clients report great enjoyment as they explore and create under Grady’s gentle guidance.

Grady has had a lifelong interest in art. When he was seven, Grady’s Aunt Josefa, visited from Mexico and brought him a set of oil paints. He began painting and never stopped. Grady was the first graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, to receive a degree in art. He went on to study in New York City at the Art Students League and continued his studies in Italy and Spain. He has taught life drawing, anatomy for artists, painting and sculpture in California, Idaho, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Hawaii. Grady is a working artist, muralist and sculptor, a Waldorf teacher and a singer/songwriter who brings lightness and fun to his art therapy sessions and occasionally even bring is guitar and harmonica!

Grady and his wife (also a musician, artist, playwright and teacher) are living art, creating 24/7. They have a family of two sheep, two cats, two bunnies and a whole passel of chickens; and they grow the best apple bananas you’ll ever eat!
